I had a good couple days shooting this past weekend for a short film I am in (written and directed by Seth Christian.) The Golden Sounds music is also going to be used in the film. Listening to the new Golden Sounds album The Fireflies Were Right, you get the impression life has gotten much better in the past five years for Todd Evans, the man behind the Golden curtain. On 2007’s Lo-Fi Sounds for a Hi-Fi Heart, Evans sounded broken and forlorn, a man trying to pick up the pieces of a shattered relationship. Interestingly, about eight months after the release of that album, Evans got married, and his music today has a much more life-affirming lilt to it. That’s not to suggest Firefliesis the feel-good album of the year: “All the androids cry / All the birds just stare / Their rusty hearts collide with angry bears,” he sings on opening track “Don’t Close Your Eyes.” But on “Firefly,” he sings, “The fireflies were right / There’s a bigger fight / Put your hands in mine and start believing.” On “We’re Not Alone,” Evans’ music recalls the arty, ambient strains of Spiritualized and Radiohead. Another highlight is “Lovers and Dreamers,” a moody, psychedelic country waltz: “We don’t need anything but lovers and dreamers,” he sings, and it seems he’s found both.
